Having studied Economics at Durham, I’m what you’d call a ‘non-cognate’. It’s not a personal slight or anything, it’s a term used to describe a graduate with a non-construction background. Me, for example. Because I was coming from an unrelated degree, I knew there’d be more study involved to get myself up to speed with construction, to get qualified and become a chartered surveyor. The key was how much support I’d receive.

The Davis Langdon Graduate Development Programme stood out immediately. Yes, they’re the biggest in the industry and it’s a national scheme, but there’s a real sense of togetherness and continuous practical support. It’s great being one of many graduates: we’re always sharing experiences and insights.

What’s more, you know what you have to do and what’s expected of you. Over the next few years, I’d like to get qualified and then travel in order to work on bigger, more prestigious projects. The great thing is, the scope of our ventures makes this a real possibility. And socially, you couldn’t want for more: theatre, bowling, grad lunches - you can get involved as much as you want to.
